Cognitive Science XML: CogSci-XML

We are defining an open-source standard for Cognitive Science and Robotic researchers using XML (Extensible Markup Language).

This is the Web site dedicated to the codification of specific areas of Cognitive Science research and application development using open-standard XML (Extensible Markup Language) specifications. This is a work in progress.

The proposed CogSci-XML family of standards will facilitate the sharing of theories and computational models across robotic and computer platforms. Researchers, students, and commercial designers will benefit from an environment that is accessible, stable, well supported, and platform-independent.

XML is a rigorously defined subset of Standardize General Markup Language (SGML). Domain-specific XML vocabularies are used by a large and ever-growing number of user communities to support a diverse set of applications, including those from mathematics, databases, vector graphics, and document authoring. Hence, a Cognitive Science applied language specified as an XML vocabulary has the assurance of longevity, stability, and support as a language, plus the advantage that a large number of users and developers are already familiar with XML.

The first focus of cogsci-xml.org will be the preliminary specification of <ec:cogsci-ec …> that quantifies Evolutionary Computation (EC). EC is a broad area of research that includes:

  • Genetic Algorithms
  • Genetic Programming
  • Evolutionary Strategies
  • Classifier Systems
  • Artificial Immune Systems

The cogsci-ec XML specification is to provide a basis for an open-source, input and output language for research and development of EC and Genetic Algorithm (GA) applications.

"To understand biological intelligence is to first explain cognitive evolution" – Ned Neanderthal, while gazing on that familiar stranger rippling in the quiet pool of water.

If cogsci-ec is successful, other areas of Cognitive Science research shall be integrated into an expanding XML family of specifications. To list only a few of the possible XML standardization efforts:

Neural Networks <nn:cogsci-nn>

Expert Systems <es:cogsci-es>

Natural Language Processing <nlp:cogsic-nlp>

Although the efforts at cogsci-xml can be construed as overly ambitious, the attempt itself can provide a focal point of effort to qualify and quantify current Cognitive understanding into computational models and applications.
